Our free readability checker helps you analyse your writing and ensure it's appropriate for your target audience. Simply paste your text and get instant feedback on readability scores, grade levels, and improvement suggestions.

Understanding Your Scores

Flesch Reading Ease (0-100)

Higher scores indicate easier text. Aim for 60-70 for general audiences, 50-60 for more technical content.

Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level

Indicates the US grade level needed to understand your text. Lower grades mean simpler, more accessible writing.

SMOG Index

Estimates years of education needed to understand the text. Useful for academic and professional writing.

UK Reading Year

Converts grade levels to UK school years (Year 1-13) to help you understand who can comfortably read your text.

Tips for Better Readability

  • 1Keep sentences short: Aim for 15-20 words per sentence on average. Break up longer sentences into shorter, clearer ones.
  • 2Use simple words: Replace complex vocabulary with simpler alternatives when possible. "Use" is clearer than "utilise."
  • 3Vary sentence length: Mix short and long sentences to create rhythm and maintain reader interest.
  • 4Use active voice: Active voice is more direct and engaging than passive voice. "We completed the project" beats "The project was completed by us."
  • 5Know your audience: Academic papers require different complexity than blog posts. Adjust your writing style accordingly.
